(report by Phil Woods)
The organisers of the Crooked Lake triathlon either have a hotline to the weather gods or they are just plain lucky because the sun always shines on Camlough (thanks 80’s popsters Aha for the inspiration for that line).
As usual the field was split into two big waves for the swim leg so a bun fight at the start was guaranteed. The 750m swim was a straightforward lap around 2 buoys. Irish development squad member Russell White posted the fastest swim time and held on to his lead throughout to win outright. Ciaran Williams led the Invictus team out of the water followed by Cormac McGarry and Phil Wood. Ciaran’s impressive swim time of 10:48 earned him 7th fastest of the day.
The bike course can only be described as “lumpy” making it difficult to get into proper rhythm however the Invictus team coped well with 3 athletes in the top 20 bike splits (Cormac, Phil and Jonny B).
On to the run and where Phil Wood gained a few places to finish third overall a tantalizing 8 seconds behind second place, closely followed by Cormac in fourth.
Jonny Hooper was next home for Invictus in 18th place after saving himself for a sprint finish to beat Jonny Boylan who eventually finished an excellent 21st.
Ciaran capitalized on his great swim to come home in 54th and 4th in his age group. Next for Invictus was Darren McCamphill who had a sold race to come home in 62nd followed by Ian Steele (87th) and Andy McMurray in (126th).
Overall it was a great day out in the sunshine with some excellent Invictus performances…But where were all the Invictus ladies?!
